Fall Into Wonder: The Rabbit Hole, Between Your Books

Chapter I of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of the great openings in all of literature. Not because of the white rabbit though the white rabbit is perfect but because of what happens after Alice follows it. The fall. The long, impossible, dreamlike fall down the rabbit hole, past shelves of books and bottles and jam jars, past maps and pictures that thin out and give way to darkness, all the way down to the bottom where Wonderland is waiting and everything is different and nothing makes the kind of sense it did before.

The Fall Into Wonder book nook is that fall. A vertical scene oriented as Alice is oriented, descending, filled with the objects that populate the hole: the floating clocks, the drifting playing cards, the teacups that seem to belong to no particular owner, the flowers and keys and bottles that accumulate in the walls of the burrow on the way down. Warm LED light illuminates it from within, giving the scene the specific quality of a dream: sourceless, golden, not quite real.

This is not a nook about Wonderland. It is a nook about the moment before Wonderland, when anything could still happen and Alice is still falling.
