Fall Into Wonder: The Rabbit Hole, Between Your Books

Chapter I of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is one of the great openings in all of literature. Not because of the white rabbit though the white rabbit is perfect but because of what happens after Alice follows it. The fall. The long, impossible, dreamlike fall down the rabbit hole, past shelves of books and bottles and jam jars, past maps and pictures that thin out and give way to darkness, all the way down to the bottom where Wonderland is waiting and everything is different and nothing makes the kind of sense it did before.

The Fall Into Wonder book nook is that fall. A vertical scene oriented as Alice is oriented, descending, filled with the objects that populate the hole: the floating clocks, the drifting playing cards, the teacups that seem to belong to no particular owner, the flowers and keys and bottles that accumulate in the walls of the burrow on the way down. Warm LED light illuminates it from within, giving the scene the specific quality of a dream: sourceless, golden, not quite real.

This is not a nook about Wonderland. It is a nook about the moment before Wonderland, when anything could still happen and Alice is still falling.

The Characters of Wonderland : Present in Every Detail

The White Rabbit

He started everything. The waistcoat, the pocket watch, the inexplicable urgency  Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late! He appears at the opening of the fall scene, already running, already late, already gone. You can follow him or you can stay where you are. Alice followed him. So did you, in a way, when you put this nook between your books.

The Mad Hatter
He isn't in the rabbit hole, his scene comes later, at the tea party that goes on forever because time stopped at six o'clock and never started again. But his teacups are in the fall. His logic pervades the whole descent. It is always teatime somewhere in this nook.

The Cheshire Cat
He hasn't appeared yet during the fall. But something in the warm glow of the nook, the way the light is sourceless, the way the scene suggests more than it shows, has his energy. He will appear later, in a tree, already grinning. In the rabbit hole, he is only a feeling.

The Queen of Hearts
She is at the bottom, ruling everything, entirely unreasonable. The playing cards drifting past in the fall are her courtiers and soldiers. They don't know yet what they are falling toward. She does. She is always waiting, at the bottom of every hole, with her one solution to everything.

The Details of Your Nook Book :

Who This Book Nook Is For ?

For the reader who loves the first chapter best: Not the trial, not the tea party the fall. The pure possibility of it. The moment before Wonderland when anything could still be anything. This nook lives in that moment permanently.

For the whimsical aesthetic reader: Cottagecore's strange cousin the one who keeps a copy of Carroll on the nightstand, who has pressed flowers in her books, who knows that the most interesting rooms are the ones you fall into by accident. This nook is for her shelf.

The most giftable Alice in Wonderland piece we carry: Between Alice's Evidence (the trial, dark and sharp) and Fall Into Wonder (the rabbit hole, warm and dreaming) this one is the gift for someone who loves the magic of the story more than its edges. For the reader who wanted, just once, to follow the rabbit and see where it went.
