Hua Mulan — 1,500 Years of the Same Story

Scholars believe that "The Ballad of Mulan" originated in the 5th or 6th century CE during the Northern Wei dynasty. It is one of the oldest continuously retold stories in world literature a short heroic poem about a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her elderly father's place in the imperial army, serves for years without discovery, wins the emperor's recognition, and asks for nothing in return except a horse to ride home.

The story of Mulan strikes a remarkable balance between upholding the traditional Confucian virtue of filial piety and simultaneously offering a subtle critique of the patriarchy and hierarchy of traditional Chinese society.

The original poem dates to the 6th century CE and reflects the influences of Mongolian-Turkic peoples on the region  the emperor in the poem is referred to not by his Chinese title but as "Khan," reflecting the nomadic culture of the Northern Wei dynasty.

Over fifteen centuries, the legend was adapted into plays, novels, operas and films  each era finding something different and urgent in Mulan's story. The earliest was a 1927 black-and-white silent film  followed by multiple versions, Chinese TV series, and ultimately Disney's 1998 animated feature and its 2020 live-action remake.
