What Makes a Library Feel Like a Library

Not all collections of shelves and books become a library. The difference is atmosphere and atmosphere, in a room, is made of very specific things.

It's the rolling ladder. That single iron ladder on its track is the most potent symbol of the serious personal library, because it announces something important: there are more books here than a person can easily reach. The room has depth and height and a private geography. The ladder is not decorative. It is proof that the collection has outgrown the ordinary.

It's the warm lamp, not an overhead light. Libraries aren't lit like offices. They're lit for reading concentrated, warm, directed. A lamp on a desk says: someone sits here, for hours, by choice. It says the room is for staying in.
