A Wizard. A Spell Book.
A Portal That Should Not Exist.

Deep in the ancient forest, where the trees have grown together into archways and the old stones crack and heal and crack again, there is a building that nobody built or if someone built it, they are no longer available to explain why. The pillars are covered in runes that predate the language they were written in. A spell book sits open at the center, its pages turning on their own, filled with light that has no visible source. And a wizard in dark robes stands before a portal that shimmers in blue and green, wand raised, calling something open that has been closed for a very long time.

This book nook is that moment. Built from 107 laser-cut pieces in 1.5–2 hours, lit by a touch-switch LED that wakes the blue glow of the portal and the warm amber of the spell book simultaneously. The wizard stands at the threshold. The gate is open. What comes through next is up to you.

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." Gandalf the Grey · The Fellowship of the Ring

Gandalf Would Recognize This Gate

The great wizard of Middle-earth the one who stood on a bridge of stone in the Mines of Moria and declared that none shall pass, the one who returned from the dead as something older and more terrible than what had been defeated  understood gates. The Doors of Durin in the mountain face. The Black Gate of Mordor. Every gate in Tolkien is a moral choice. The wizard in this nook, dark-robed and wand-raised before a shimmering portal, has that same quality: he is not going through this gate because it is safe. He is going through it because it is necessary.

The Enchanter · Arthurian Legend

Merlin's Kind of Magic

Merlin : the wizard of Camelot, the tutor of kings, the figure who appears and disappears and reappears across centuries of mythology  was always associated with the places between worlds. The liminal spaces: the forest clearing where nothing ordinary happens, the cave behind the waterfall, the standing stones that predate memory. His magic was not flashy. It was old. It came from books and from knowledge that outlasted the people who first wrote it down. The spell book in this nook, its pages turning on their own, filled with ancient light that is Merlin's kind of magic. Patient. Inevitable. Still working long after the wizard has moved on.
