Notre-Dame de Paris : 850 Years and Counting
Construction of Notre-Dame de Paris began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully, who decided that Paris needed a cathedral worthy of the growing medieval capital. It took nearly two centuries to complete finished in approximately 1345 and has stood on the Île de la Cité, the ancient heart of Paris, ever since.
In those 850+ years, it has witnessed the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte, the funeral masses of French presidents, revolutions, occupations, liberation and the quiet daily practice of faith across hundreds of generations of Parisians. Victor Hugo set his 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame within its walls and towers, turning the cathedral into one of literature's most enduring fictional spaces and, arguably, saving it from demolition in the process.
On April 15, 2019, a structural fire broke out in the cathedral's roof space. By the time it was extinguished, the wooden spire had collapsed, most of the wooden roof had been destroyed, and the cathedral's upper walls were severely damaged.
The world watched. The world mourned. And then the world got to work.
More than 1,200 people worked on Notre-Dame's restoration throughout France. To rebuild using similar materials and techniques to those used in the 12th century, skilled artisans including quarry workers, carpenters, mortar makers, and master stonecutters were hired.
Notre-Dame de Paris reopened on December 7, 2024, following completion of restoration work five years after the fire. The reopening ceremony was presided over by the Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron and nearly 50 heads of state and government.
