"I feel terrible, like there's a weight on my chest."

"A heart's a heavy burden."

Mechanical spider legs. Smoking chimneys. Observation domes with porthole windows. Crenellated towers. A folded wing on one side. Gear wheels. Exhaust pipes reaching toward a sky that is always somewhere between dawn and catastrophe. A castle that was never meant to stay in one place that moves as if it has somewhere to be and doesn't particularly care whether you're ready for it.

Howl's Moving Castle in laser-cut wood, without glue, in your hands built to stand between your books like it just arrived from the Welsh mountains and is considering where to go next.

Howl's Moving Castle — The Film, The Book, The Legend

Howl's Moving Castle was released by Studio Ghibli in 2004, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by British author Diana Wynne Jones, one of the most beloved works of fantasy literature in the English language.

The story follows Sophie Hatter, a young hatter's daughter who is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and transformed into an old woman. Seeking a cure, she takes refuge in the moving castle of the wizard Howl a structure of impossible mechanical complexity that walks across the landscape on giant spider legs, powered by a fire demon named Calcifer, maintained by a young apprentice named Markl, and operated by a wizard who is, beneath considerable quantities of vanity and theatrical despair, genuinely good.

The film is widely considered one of Miyazaki's masterpieces a meditation on war, aging, love and the particular courage required to be yourself when the world is trying to turn you into something else. Its visual design the castle itself, with its churning gears and asymmetrical architecture, its smoking chimneys and impossible bulk moving with surprising grace is one of the most original and most immediately recognizable images in cinema history.

The Steampunk Ghibli Aesthetic

The design language of the castle :  mechanical, organic, impossible, beautiful  defines what we now call the steampunk Ghibli aesthetic: the specific visual vocabulary that Miyazaki developed across Nausicaä, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso and Howl's Moving Castle for technology that is both industrial and alive, both threatening and charming, both ancient and impossible.

This book nook is made entirely from natural unfinished wood and the warm sepia tone of the laser-cut birch complements the aesthetic beautifully. There are no painted colors here. There doesn't need to be. The shapes do everything.
