 Alice's Evidence:
The Last Chapter of Wonderland Built in Wood and Light

Chapter XII. The final chapter of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The one where the nonsense tips into something sharper.

Alice has been called as a witness at the Queen of Hearts' trial. The King presides. The jury of animals scribbles notes that mean nothing. The White Rabbit reads from a scroll. The evidence is a letter that proves nothing. The verdict has already been decided, it is always Off with her head! and Alice, who has been growing and shrinking and following a rabbit down a hole and enduring the logic of an entirely illogical world since the first page, finally stands up.

"You're nothing but a pack of cards!"

And the whole thing falls apart. As it was always going to. As it should.

This book nook is that scene. The outer panel is the Queen's playing card court, black and gold, spades and hearts, the ace at the center, the words on the scroll. Open the nook, and inside: the gothic trial hall, the arched corridors, Alice at her lectern, the White Rabbit at his stand, the Queen's rose window glowing red behind the throne. Everything Carroll described. Everything you imagined the first time you read it.

The Iconic Details of Wonderland : Every One Present

Alice : Standing Her Ground

Alice stands at the witness lectern in her blue dress and white pinafore the visual shorthand for every girl who has ever been in a room where the rules make no sense and is deciding whether to say so. She is the smallest figure in the trial hall. She is also the only one telling the truth.

The White Rabbit

The White Rabbit the herald of the trial, the creature Alice followed down the hole in the first place stands at his court stand with scroll and trumpet. He was always in a hurry. Here he is finally in the room he was rushing toward all along, and it turns out to be exactly as absurd as everything else.

The Queen of Hearts' Rose Window

The stained glass rose window at the far end of the trial hall backlit in deep red is the Queen's throne. Her face at the center of the petals. The warm red light it casts across the checkered floor is the most atmospheric detail in the entire nook. It is Wonderland's ruling principle in glass and light: Off with their heads.

The Pack of Cards

Playing cards scatter across every surface and level of the trial hall some stacked, some floating, some leaning against the arched walls. They are the courtiers, the soldiers, the jurors. They have faces only on one side. Before the chapter ends, Alice will shout the words that turn them back into paper and the whole thing will fall apart.

The Gothic Arched Corridors

The repeating gothic arches that define the trial hall stretch deep into the scene, their carved ornamental detail visible at every layer. The depth effect arch behind arch behind arch into darkness is the architectural representation of a dream logic: things keep going, and the further you go, the less they make sense.

The Checkered Floor

The black and white checkered floor one of the most persistent visual motifs in the Alice universe runs from the base of the nook to the foot of the Queen's throne. Through the Looking-Glass is an entire chess game. Alice's Adventures is a court trial. Both are games with arbitrary rules. The checkered floor is always the clue.
